Introduction

Superior is a UI Framework for Sketch, based on Overrides. Superior offers a number of basic iOS elements like Navigation Bars, Table Cells and other elements from Apple Human Guidelines that allows you easily edit the contents and piece the interface elements together brick by brick.

Use Sketch Libraries

Open Sketch settings (⌘,) go to Libraries tab and click at the "Add Library…" button. If you'll have "Library file not found", click right button on the library and choose "Relocate".

How to use Symbols

Create Master Symbols

To create Symbols choose Artboard Tool (A), draw a rectangle, then go to Layer → Create Symbol.

Paste Symbols

Go to Insert → Document → Your Symbol. Otherwise you can paste symbol from Symbols button in the toolbar.

Create Instance Symbol

Create a symbol and paste this symbol to another. Don't forget to rename instance symbol for keeping Overrides clean and understandable.

Use Overrides

Select the pasted symbol. Navigate to the right side Sketch app and you'll find the Overrides panel. Use it for replace text, component pieces or bitmaps.

Edit symbols in the library

File structure

Superior UI Library contain 4 pages:

  • Bars;
  • Views;
  • Controls;
  • Assets.

Bars, Views, Controls pages contain components from Apple HIG. Assets contain Text Styles, Colors and other small assets, like glyphs.

Using placeholders

For your own instance symbols we created placeholders. It is the empty artboard with pre-defined name and size. This feature will save your time and will keep your file clean. To use placeholder follow these steps:

  • Choose the placeholder in Resources section;
  • Paste your content;
  • Rename the artboard with replacing "Placeholder" word with instance definition (see Naming tips);
  • Create symbol (Layer → Create Symbol).

Organize Symbols

In Superior we used Category dividers, Subcategory dividers and tags for organize symbols by sections. Each section has Symbols and Resources sides. In Symbols side are placed components (master symbols) and in Resources side are placed instance symbols that used inside masters.

Setup style for the project

Change the colors

The most robust way to change pre-setted colors is to press ⌘+⌥+F or Edit → Find and Replace Colors and change any color. This changes will apply everywhere. If you use Shared and Text styles, you need to update these styles by hands. To do this navigate to the Assets page, select the layers and update styles in the inspector.

Edit the text styles

All text styles are placed and organized on Assets page. To edit them or change font select text layer, add needed appearance and update from inspector.

Using prototyping feature

Connect the screens inside your project

Almost each component has a prototyping hotspot. At the bottom Overrides you can find the empty Hotspot instances. All what you need is to set a destination artboard.

Add the hotspots to your components

To add the hotspot into the component, choose Hotspot tool (H) and draw a rectangle.

Work with Preview file

In this file we showed almost all combinations for each component. You can use Preview file as a reference, or copy needed Symbol and paste in your design.

Copy-Paste Technique

You can open two different Sketch windows with the split view. In first side open your design, in second one Preview file. You'll have access to the components list at the same time as you working on the project.

Style Guides for the developers

You can turn this file into styleguides for the developers. Organize used components in the your design and add some specs for Table View, Navigation Bar and other components. You'll find the symbols for creating specs in _Assets/Specs section.
